Description

This course examines the art of the short story and related prose genres through the lens of two existential themes: love and death. We will read fiction by late-nineteenth and twentieth-century Russian and Russophone writers such as Tolstoy, Chekhov, Babel, Platonov, Nabokov, Shalamov, Ginzburg, Aitmatov, Petrushevskaya and Pelevin. Students will investigate the genre of the short story and its specific poetics, learn about Russian literary and cultural traditions, and develop critical skills necessary for analyzing works of literary fiction. The workload includes attentive reading of literary texts, short presentations, student-led discussions, and regular writing of critical essays. All readings and discussions are in English.
