Environmental History

This concentration within EA is designed to appeal to students interested in studying the relationships between humans and their environments over time—and to do so utilizing the methods and frameworks of Environmental Analysis and History. In consultation with their advisor, students will complete a minimum of 12 classes, including the four EA Core courses, five in the History concentration, and three in related fields.

Course Requirements (12 Courses):

Students must complete the core courses, course or EA 010 PZcourse, and course or course, or EA 030L KS, and one senior capstone course (course or course). Students must also take the following:

  • History Concentration: in consultation with their advisor, students will take five courses from among those currently offered or similar classes:

    • course - Science and Empire 

    • course - Dark Ecologies 

    • course - Indian Ocean World 

    • course - Ocean: The Sea Through Time 

    • course - U.S. Environmental History or HIST113 CM - United States Environmental History 

    • course - Water in the West 

    • EA174 HM - Building Los Angeles 

    • HIST096 CM - The Amazon 

    • course - Food and the Environment in Asia and the Pacific   

    • HIST158 PZ - Ecological History

    • course - Native American History 

    • HIST016 PZ - Environmental History​ 

    • HIST055 PZ - Disease and Disasters in North American History

  • Related Fields: in consultation with their adviser, students will take three environment-themed classes from such departments as Anthropology, Art History, English, German and Russian, Geology, Philosophy, Politics, and Religion.
